The first signs of spring can help us look at the world around us with fresh eyes. Looking indoors, those fresh eyes are drawn to corners of our homes that need a good declutter, wash, or perhaps something in between. So what is spring cleaning? Simply put, it’s a thorough clean done to our houses after winter. The warmer air makes it easy to open up the windows and air out our spaces, and reinvigorates us to tackle any tasks we put off for the past year.
Here are five tips to get you ready for a season of cleaning.
Keep Your Cleaner Cupboard Small
Often, people feel like they need specialized cleaning products for every area in their home. But it doesn’t have to be that way! A good multipurpose cleaner, bleach, dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, and several microfibre cloths in any combination can improve just about any area of your home. When searching for a multipurpose cleaner, try out an eco-friendly option, they usually have the same amount of cleaning power with fewer chemicals.
Wipe Walls and Shine Windows
Cleaning from top to bottom is the best way to ensure you aren’t making extra work for yourself while getting every area of the room. Just ensure you don’t forget the walls and windows! Dust can settle on vertical surfaces just as it does on horizontal ones. A damp cloth will easily whisk it off of walls and windows. If you have blinds or curtains, ensure you wash or wipe them first. Don’t be afraid to do a deep scrub on the window sill and around the edges.
Make a List for the Kitchen and Bathroom
These areas of your home likely see the most action and the most germs. A good, deep cleaning of these spaces beyond the weekly tidy is necessary for an all-around spring clean. Start by making a list of areas that need more love, like the appliances, cabinets, or shelves. Declutter anything that is out of date or simply not used. In the kitchen, wash the window curtains and in the bathroom wash or change out your shower curtain. Ensure exhaust fans in both rooms are working properly at removing moisture and steam from your home.
Do Some Seasonal Switch-Outs
A change of seasons provides a natural reminder to check certain areas in your home that can easily be forgotten about. Things like changing the batteries in your smoke detectors and switching out your air filters ensure your home is safe for the rest of the year. You can also clear out any debris around your air conditioner while you’re at it, you never know when you might need to start turning it on! Consider having your ducts cleaned to ensure the air running through your house is clean, allergen-free, and doesn’t circulate dust.
Deep Clean Your Electronics
We spend plenty of time on our phones, computers, and even watching TV. But when was the last time you did a proper clean of these devices? Use electronic-safe cleaning solutions and give screens a good wipe down from any fingerprints. Ensure you remove phones and laptops from cases so you can do a full 360-degree disinfection. A canister of condensed air will help to remove any dust from keyboards and charging ports. Use toothpicks or Q-Tips in nooks and crannies for any dirt or debris.
